5 Best Probiotics for SIBO

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth or “SIBO” for short is a condition that affects the small intestine, the problems start due to bacteria that usually grows in other parts of the gut, and starts growing in the small intestine.
This can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, as well as a lowered ability for your gut to absorb nutrients from the food you consume.
Probiotics are a great way to treat and also reverse SIBO, because they repopulate the gut with healthy bacteria, while detoxing the bad bacteria, which helps restore the proper bacterial balance in the microbiome.
Here are the 5 BEST probiotics for SIBO recommended by me and my family personally, as well as according to numerous reviews posted and analyzed online.
Best Bacterial Strains For SIBO
SIBO is one of the common disorders of our gut. 80% of people with IBS have SIBO. Loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea are among the most common symptoms indicating SIBO.
However, probiotics are always there to the rescue against the majority of bowel syndromes. Research suggests various bacterial strain-laden probiotics that restore our gut microbiota.
One of the best probiotic strains for SIBO is Bacillus coagulan. These spore-forming bacteria inhibit the growth of pathogen bacteria, regulating immune health and increasing gastric motility and excretion.
Besides this, strains of Lactobacillus such as Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus acidophilus are also included in the treatment plan for SIBO. These acid-producing strains colonize our gut and help refurbish our gut microbiome.
Probiotics with these bacterial species are highly recommended for common GI tract disorders and are also believed to relieve the unpleasant symptoms accompanying the disorders.

#1 Choice: Seed Probiotic
Seed products measure the AFU or active fluorescent units instead of just the CFU that most manufacturers measure. AFU is a more exact science that gives customers more accurate information about cell viability. This allows Seed to know more about the effects of their products and how they can benefit major systems within the body.
Besides improving gut health, Seed products support healthy skin, cardiovascular health, and colon support. The way the product is designed means essential strains arrive in the colon without being destroyed by stomach acid along the way.
Seed probiotics also contain prebiotics. This makes it easy to get everything needed from one product. Customers take two capsules a day for maximum benefits.

Skin Probiotic by Persona Nutrition is one of the most popular supplement products launched by the brand.
Several research papers suggest that a healthy gut plays an important role in maintaining our skin and keeping it healthy. And for a healthy gut, one must have a balanced microbiome.
This is where Skin Probiotic steps in! The product consists of a unique blend of complexion maintaining probiotics and carotenoids.
Skin Probiotic consists of bacterial strains such as Lactobacillus paracasei (St-11) with a per serving of 10 Billion CFU. L. paracasei helps support a healthy skin barrier and keeps it hydrated. Besides this, Lactobacillus johnsonii (La-1) with a per serving of 1 billion CFU along with Vitamin A (2350 mcg), Astaxanthin (2.5 mg), and Lycopene (2.5 mg) are particularly useful for sun-exposed skin.

Probiology offers one of the best and most potent probiotics to its customers. Their Probiotics+Prebiotics formula provides 250 times better survival rate than other standard probiotics.
Probiology’s Gut+ probiotic stands out from others because it has a high ratio of absorption in the gut. It reduces stress by improving serotonin levels in the body. It also contains bacterial strains that can improve gut digestion and elimination without unpleasant IBS symptoms.
Thus, what makes Probiology better than other top brands?
According to the brand, quality is above quantity. They collaborate with top scientists and nutritionists to make probiotic formulas. For them, adding the best and clinically tested bacterial strains is a top-notch priority.
Their formulas contain 4 live + potent strains of gut bacteria, distributing about 40 Billion CFUs to our gut. They include lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacterium lactis, lactobacillus Plantarum, and lactobacillus paracasei.
According to research, 96% of standard probiotics don’t even reach our stomach because of not being able to survive the gastric acid. So how are probiotics by Probiology any different?
Interestingly, they include the maktrek® marine polysaccharide complex. These brown seaweed extracts provide a protective mechanism against stomach acid and provide 250 times better survival than any other formulas.
Their products do not require any refrigeration and also contain prebiotic fibers that aid the function of probiotics in improving gut health.

Physician’s Choice 60 Billion Probiotic
Starting off with my personal favorite probiotic, the Dr. Approved Physician’s Choice 60 Billion Probiotic and as the name suggests this probiotic has over 60 billion CFUs (healthy bacteria) coming from 10 different probiotic strains.
The probiotic also includes a prebiotic called inulin which comes from Organic Jerusalem Artichoke Root & Organic Chicory Root, I’m a big fan of it, as it’s been proven that prebiotics dramatically increase your guts ability to actually absorb the probiotics, maybe it’s one of the reasons why the Physician’s Choice probiotic works so well for me.
Out of the 10 different probiotic strains L. Acidophilus is easily one of my favorites, as it’s been proven to have profound effects on the gut, it also helps with conditions like IBS, SIBO and IBD.
The Physician’s Choice is also free of all allergens, it’s totally free of dairy, gluten, soy and nuts and also GMOs, another benefit is that it’s shelf stable. Overall, it’s my personal favorite.
Ancient Probiotics Ultimate Once Daily
Ancient Probiotics is a well established brand, which gained its popularity due to being inspired by Ayurvedic principles.
The Ultimate Once Daily contains 50 billion CFUs per capsule, coming from 17 different probiotic strains, which is quite a lot.
You should consume a single capsule of the probiotic once per day, ideally on an empty stomach. It’s also worth mentioning that this probiotic is both gluten and soy free, but there’s no info on it being dairy free unfortunately.
This probiotic has been proven to be very effective when it comes to treating digestive problems, however some people report bad side effects for the first few days, due to the high probiotic strain count.
If you have sensitive digestion, I’d recommend going for something like the Physician’s Choice probiotic, as I got better results with that and also without side effects.
Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotic
Up next coming in 3rd, we have the Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotic, which comes in many different options including a probiotic for men, women, mood, digestion and more.
Today we’ll be taking a look at the most basic and also the most popular one, the Once Daily Women’s probiotic.
With a CFU count of 50 billion, coming from 16 different probiotic strains, it’s super effective for treating conditions like IBS, IBD, SIBO and other digestive problems.
The women’s version is also really good for treating yeast infections and can also contribute to vaginal health.
The probiotic is shelf-stable and free of dairy, gluten, soy and also GMOs, it’s a great option.
Hyperbiotics Pro 15 Probiotic
Coming in at number 4 we have the Hyperbiotics Pro-15 Probiotic and as the name implies, the probiotic contains 15 different probiotic strains with over 5 billion CFUs per capsule.
Out of all the probiotic strains included in the probiotic blend one of my personal favorites is L. Acidophilus, which is also included in my personal favorite probiotic, the Physician’s Choice.
The reason I really like this strain is because of how effective it is when it comes to treating digestive problems like leaky gut, IBS and IBD.
The probiotic is also shelf stable and is free of all allergens including dairy, soy and gluten. It’s also shelf stable, which is another plus.
The only problem I have with this probiotic is its low CFU dosage at only 5 billion, which in my opinion is not optimal and therefore a probiotic with a higher CFU count would be a much better pick.
DrFormulas Nexabiotic Saccharomyces Boulardii
DrFormulas is an interesting probiotic as it only contains a single strain called Saccharomyces Boulardii, which seems to be very effective with treating digestive discomfort.
The total healthy bacteria count per capsule is 10 billion CFUs, which is unfortunately again on the lower side.
The recommended dosage is a single capsule daily, ideally consumed on an empty stomach with some water.
I’m also happy to say that this probiotic is shelf stable and thus requires no refrigeration, it’s also allergen free, which is a plus.
In my opinion, this is a solid probiotic with a proven strain for treating digestive disorders, however it definitely deserves the last place on the list, as it has a low CFU count and also only has a single strain.
