Can you Take Probiotics with Antibiotics?
Yes, you can take probiotics with antibiotics, in fact I highly recommend it in order to avoid the antibiotics killing all the good bacteria in your gut, however you have to be vary of something.
It’s very important that you don’t take probiotics within 2 hours of taking antibiotics, if you take probiotics close to when you took antibiotics, there’s a high chance that antibiotics will kill all the healthy bacteria in the probiotic.
When to Take Probiotics with Antibiotics?
It’s recommended to take probiotics at least 2 hours after taking your antibiotic, by ensuring at least 2 hours have passed, we’re giving the antibiotic enough time and room to do its job.
This will also ensure that both the antibiotic and the probiotic achieve the best results, without “fighting” each other.
How Probiotics Help after Antibiotics?
After a course of antibiotics chances are high that your gut bacteria will be completely out of balance, this is due to the antibiotics trying to kill the virus/bad bacteria, but by doing so they also kill the good bacteria. Probiotics help replenish the good bacteria and help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria.

The first probiotic on the list of the best after antibiotic probiotics is the Physician’s Choice 60 Billion Probiotic, the reason why this one is first and why I’m such a big fan of it is due to the high bacteria count coming in at 60 Billion, in addition, the bacteria comes from 10 different probiotic strains, which is a big plus.
One of the main effects you’ll experience with this probiotic is a big improvement in your digestion, especially since the Physician’s Choice also has an included prebiotic fiber blend, which makes the probiotic even more effective.
The recommended dosage is a single capsule per day, ideally before a meal with lots of water.
This probiotic is also 100% free of GMOs and is also 100% vegan, which is a great plus.
At number 2 we have a slightly less potent probiotic, but still a solid choice.
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Bifidobacterium longum
Out of the two strains I’m a big fan of Lactobacillus acidophilus, due to its positive and beneficial effects on boosting the immune system and improving digestion.
The recommended dosage according to the directions is a single capsule per day before breakfast. However since the CFU count is quite low on these I’d recommend taking at least 2 per day, or opting for the Physician’s Choice probiotic, as it’s much more effective.
This next probiotic is interesting, as it’s a miracle for some, but a disappointment for others. Dr. Ohira’s probiotic has 900 Million (yes not even a billion) CFU per capsule, but luckily the bacteria does come from a wide variety of probiotic strains, it comes from 12 different probiotic strains in fact.

Out of the 12 strains above, I really like Bifidobacterium breve as it’s known to reverse constipation, protects from inflammation and reverses IBS.
The recommended dosage according to the instructions by Dr. Ohhira is to take 2 capsules per day with some food and water, unfortunately in my opinion that dose is still quite low, as you could easily up it to 4 capsules per day…
In terms of the guarantees, Dr. Ohhira’s probiotic is 100% vegetarian, free of all SBO, dairy, and soy, which is a great plus, however, I’m a bit disappointed by the CFU count. For the full review go here:
BioSchwartz is a popular supplement brand and their Advanced Strength probiotic contains 40 billion healthy bacteria coming from 4 different probiotic strains, these include:
- Bifidobacterium lactis,
- Lactobacillus acidophilus,
- Lactobacillus plantarum,
- Lactobacillus paracasei
The strains above are combined into a great probiotic blend, which is very effective for reversing IBS and populating your gut with healthy bacteria.
The recommended daily dosage is one serving, which is 2 capsules (20 billion CFUs per capsule)
Last on the list is the MegaFlora probiotic by MegaFood, this probiotic contains 20 billion healthy bacteria per capsule, coming from 14 different probiotic strains, unfortunately, this one does not come with a prebiotic like Physician’s Choice probiotic, which is a bit of a bummer.
For me I’ve had a solid experience with the MegaFlora probiotic and even though it’s not as potent or effective as the Physician’s Choice probiotic I still noticed some benefits from it.
The recommended dosage is a single capsule daily, ideally before a meal with a bit of water.
In terms of allergies, the company guarantees that the capsules are 100% gluten, dairy and GMO free, which is a big plus.
