Probiotics (healthy soldiers and bodyguards) are living microorganisms that do their best to keep our gut healthy and our immune system strong.
Many of us turn to probiotics to try and improve our health, but with the options being so numerous, it can sometimes be hard to decide and pick the right probiotic for your needs.
Over the years, I’ve tested over 50 different probiotics and these are my 9 favorites, sorted into categories.
Most recommended probiotic
Renew Life Ultimate Flora Critical Care
Renew Life’s Ultimate Flora Critical Care is a mix of a variety of different probiotic strains, it’s a mix of 10 different strains, containing over 50 Billion CFUs, which is a respectable number.
If we take a look at the common benefits people experience from the strains in this probiotic we will find:
- Improved digestion,
- Improved ability for the gut to absorb nutrients
- Faster metabolism
- Reduction in conditions such a stomach aches and constipation
The benefits of the species also include improved gut health and a guaranteed reduction in bad gut bacteria – with that you can expect a reduction in the amount of infections, which is really important of course.
You’ll also be in luck if you have problems with dairy, as one of the strains in Renew Life’s probiotic (Lactobacillus bulgaricus) really helps in reversing lactose intolerance, it’s also one of the best probiotics for gastritis.
Most effective probiotic
INNATE Response Formulas, Flora 20-14
There are many extremely strong probiotics on the market, but their potency doesn’t really mean much if the formula is created in a way that will be hard for your gut to absorb.
With INNATE Response Formulas Probiotic that won’t be the case, as it’s in our opinion, THE MOST EFFECTIVE probiotic you can buy.
Innate is one of the first companies ever in the supplement industry to put out a public guarantee that the product is free of glyphosate residue, this is the key part that dramatically increases your gut’s ability to absorb the healthy bacteria.
The probiotic has been making headlines due to the guarantee put out by INNATE Response Formulas and we can agree with the headlines, this is one of the most effective probiotics out there.
Best affordable probiotic
Vitamin Bounty Pro 25 Probiotic
Don’t let the affordability factor fool you, Vitamin Bounty is one of the most popular and trusted brands in the supplement industry, thus you can expect a very high-quality product.
In fact, with over 25 Billion CFUs and 13 strains of probiotics (and prebiotics), this is a very very good choice!
Best of all? It comes in at an extremely affordable price point!
It’s also important to note that Vitamin Bounty Pro 25 Probiotics also contain a natural prebiotic that fuels the strains to get absorbed by your gut even easier and so that you, in the end, get even more benefits.
It’s probably also worth mentioning that to this date, this is the 2nd highest-reviewed probiotic of all time, we highly recommend it too, especially for sibo. (read more)
Best shelf-stable probiotic
Advanced Naturals Ultimate Floramax Probiotic
The reason for why we picked the Advanced Naturals probiotic as the best shelf stable probiotic, is because of one statement that the company promotes often…
“Advanced naturals probiotics are gluten, dairy, and soy-free, and the potency of their probiotics are guaranteed through expiration.”
It’s also worth mentioning that this product doesn’t need to be refrigerated in order to maintain its potency, which is highly beneficial, especially if you’ll be using these as travel probiotics.
The Ultimate Floramax probiotic contains over 10 different probiotic strains in the quantity of 50 Billion live cultures per single capsule – this is incredibly impressive.
One of the reasons why this product is so popular is also because the probiotic is 100% dairy and gluten-free, which makes it ideal for anyone looking to avoid animal products…
Speaking of avoiding natural probiotics…
Best all-natural probiotic
Garden of Life RAW Probiotics
This is one of my current favorites, reason?
It’s 100% natural and vegetarian, the probiotic won multiple awards for being the best probiotic of the year 2018 and 2019, due to the quality and number of strains.
This probiotic has a CRAZY high count of CFUs (healthy bacteria) coming in at 100 Billion CFU, paired with 34 different strains and the fact that the probiotic is 100% natural and you’ll quickly start to realize why I love it so much. 🙂
The only thing that disappointed us was the fact that this probiotic has no enteric-coating, this means that about 30% of the live organisms will be destroyed by your stomach’s acid, which is a bit disappointing.
It also brings down the “actual” count of absorbable CFUs to around 70 Billion, which is still a lot, but not as much as advertised.
Best multi-strain probiotic
InnovixLabs Multi-Strain Probiotic
InnovixLabs is one of the best multi-strain probiotics out there with over 31 different probiotic strains and a count of over 50 Billion CFUs (healthy bacteria), it’s also one of the best probiotics for lactose intolerance.
The multi-strain probiotic contains probiotics like Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria, Pediococcus, and Lactococcus, which all contribute to helping restore and heal your gut.
I was also positively surprised to see a guarantee by InnovixLabs for the potency, which guarantees that the probiotic will stay fully potent right up to the expiration date.
Unlike the previous probiotic, this one DOES feature enteric-coated capsules, which ensure that the probiotics will actually make it past your stomach’s acid.
The only thing I didn’t like about InnovixLabs is the fact that it includes quite a bit of additives like Microcrystalline Cellulose, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, and Silicon Dioxide.
Best everyday probiotic
Culturelle Daily Probiotic
Backed by science! With over 1,000 scientific studies and 10 years of research, this is probably one of the best and safest long term probiotics you can buy. According to the research, it’s been scientifically proven to work in harmony with your gut in order to improve your health and immune system. It’s also a great travel probiotic.
In addition, I also listed it as one of the best probiotics for psoriasis.
With over 10 billion CFUs and a capsule coating capable of surviving stomach acid, this is a great choice for your daily probiotic, mainly because it’s not too strong, but also not too weak. Culturelle also makes one of the best baby probiotics.
Best women’s probiotic
Garden of Life’s Raw Probiotics for Women
The reason why I believe Garden of Life’s One Daily Probiotic for Women is your best choice for all my female friends is that a single capsule contains 16 different probiotic strains and 50 billion CFUs.
Additionally, there’s also a prebiotic added to the mixture, the prebiotic is a mix or organic potato and acacia fiber, which will dramatically boost your guts ability to absorb the healthy bacteria.
The reason why this is titled Women’s probiotic is that there’s an increased count of L. reuteri and L. fermentum bacteria, which are known to support vaginal health and immunity.
To take full advantage of these probiotics, it’s crucial that you also try and increase the amount of prebiotics you consume through food. Foods high in prebiotics are asparagus, onions, artichoke, and garlic. And if you’re pregnant you may want to look into a probiotic for pregnancy – read here.
The brand is also well known for their histamine intolerance probiotic, which is a great bonus.
Best overall probiotic
BlueBiotics Ultimate Care
And finally, best of all, my top pick for 2020 is BlueBiotics Ultimate care. Here’s why…
First and most important, this is one of the rare probiotics that also contains S. Boulardii probiotics, it’s probably one of the most effective, but also most expensive – which is the reason why many other brands skip out on it.
It’s also worth mentioning that all the capsules are designed to resist stomach acid, which is an absolute must for any probiotic to be effective.
All the capsules are also 100% vegetarian and free of any additives, the probiotic is also one of the best probiotic for acne.
I’d highly recommend it, as it’s also the one I’m using on a daily basis and my dad as well, he says it’s a very good h pylori probiotic.
